When planning the selection of managers, the company must allow for the period of time within which it expects to find a suitable candidate. Of course, executive recruitment\u00a0is not a frequent process for companies, and when faced with such a situation, it is sometimes difficult to predict the total duration of the recruitment project. There are 4 factors that need to be taken into account when estimating the future length of the executive search<\/a> process:<\/p>\n

1. The company’s ability to attract candidates<\/h3>\n

If the company is well-known in the labour market, the selection process is somewhat easier, as most of the candidates are already familiar with the company, its internal culture and its activities. If the company is not well known or not well known, it becomes very difficult to attract candidates. The fewer the number of candidates, the harder it is to choose and the longer the selection process. Organisations that are less concerned about their employer image tend to take longer to organise their executive recruitment<\/a>\u00a0process.<\/p>\n

2. Negotiating with candidates<\/h3>\n

Unlike in a specialist search, in an executive search the negotiation process can be very lengthy. Lasting weeks or months, so even if the right candidate is selected, time still needs to be allowed for the negotiation process. Negotiations take time because the manager is not only concerned with the limits of the remuneration and the values offered, but also with the company’s development plans and the limits of the manager’s responsibilities. The broader nature of the job means that the negotiation process raises a wide range of questions that are difficult to answer quickly and need to be discussed internally.<\/p>\n

3. The risk of an offer from an existing employer<\/h3>\n

When recruiting managers, it is important to allow for the possibility that a candidate may receive an offer from an employer and may decide to stay in the current position. In this case, it is best, in terms of evaluation and time-saving resources, to have a back-up candidate who is slightly below the competencies and who is also suitable. In the event of the main candidate’s withdrawal, it is then possible to return to the other candidate without wasting time. If there is no back-up candidate, the search for one can take an additional few weeks and, with interviews and testing, can take up to more than a month.<\/p>\n

4. Internal manager evaluation processes<\/h3>\n

The speed of the internal decision-making process is often overlooked when assessing the length of the executive search process. Unlike in the selection of a specialist, internal managers who have been involved in the selection process and have decision-making power can take time to reach a decision. Often there are candidate interview sessions which, once they get underway, the weeks start to melt away. The internal candidate review process therefore needs to be well anticipated and tightly controlled to avoid it becoming a long and fruitless discussion.<\/p>\n

An ideally planned executive search process normally takes around 30-40 working days. An additional calendar month must be added because the selected candidate must leave his\/her current job.
