Visiting a shop, a bank, contacting various consultancy firms or talking to a spokesperson of a serious company, one gets the impression that the majority of people working in Lithuania are young or middle-aged people. Does this mean that companies no longer need employees aged 45-60? It can be quite difficult to see the real trends in the labour market simply because of the different attitudes of employees and employers.<\/p>\n

The most common job advertisements on the internet are those with a requirement of at least 1 year of similar work experience. Employers who ask for experience and professional knowledge are usually looking for employees who are already specialists or professionals. Few are willing to take on someone with no knowledge who will need to devote additional time, attention and money to training. And when should a young person who has just graduated from university learn everything if nobody wants to employ him or offers him a job for pennies?<\/p>\n

This is the perception among young people. Older workers may be less successful in recruiting because some employers give priority to young professionals. From the employers’ perspective, what matters to them is the knowledge and motivation of the employee. So, what is the reality: are young or older workers more in demand during recruitment<\/a>? This often depends on several key aspects.<\/p>\n

Employer objectives<\/h2>\n

Every company’s manager aims to improve business performance by organising recruitment, and this is often what recruitment professionals help to do. Even before the recruitment process, self-respecting employers, after assessing their company’s financial capacity, determine in advance the profile of the employee they need. If there is not a lot of money to pay for the work a person does, the employer will probably look for a low-skilled worker who will be satisfied with the minimum wage. However, for positions of responsibility, especially, large companies want to hire an experienced, creative and motivated employee.<\/p>\n

This is when the distinct age groups of workers become most apparent, which, it is worth noting, vary greatly depending on the industry. In some professions, experience is more important than others, so middle-aged or slightly older workers may also be selected. But jobs that are characterised by dynamism, a creative working day, a more libertarian work policy, etc., usually require a relatively young age and the youthful maximalism of a young person. This is why many recruiters advise you to find out what companies are targeting before you even look for employees or go for a job interview, so that you can at least roughly predict whether or not the age of the applicant will be suitable for the employer.<\/p>\n

Youth vs experience<\/h2>\n

Although recruitment is most closely linked to the objectives of the company’s managers, it is possible to identify the main characteristics of a young and a slightly older employee. Taking these into account, it is easy to understand when a professional is suitable. Thus, the first advantage of a young worker is that he or she is unlikely to have started a family yet, which means more frequent business trips and more flexible schedules. They are also often selected for their initiative at work to propose ideas, adjust the business model and make suggestions that can lead to success. In addition, young people tend to be more globally oriented than locally oriented, so they speak more than one language and are not afraid to make business contacts or represent the company abroad.<\/p>\n

However, in some cases, experience is valued more favourably because in almost all cases it demonstrates responsibility for the tasks at hand. Over several or even several dozen years, this type of professional usually knows the process of performance, the way out of crisis situations and, in some cases, even the outcome of projects. Senior staff are often characterised by loyalty. They are not distracted by multiple jobs: once they know exactly what they are capable of doing and have agreed with their managers, they become attached to one company where they can work for years.
