One good manager replaces dozens of mediocrities

What should a good leader look like? Many people are divided on this question: some believe that a good leader should be tough, demanding, but able to use diplomacy to get positive business results from subordinates. Others believe that the autocratic manager is now obsolete and should be replaced by a true leader who is able to lead the company creatively and interact amicably with his/her subordinates. In any case, the CEO always becomes the face of the company, and the selection of the CEO itself requires a specific strategy, clear selection criteria and a clear understanding of what kind of CEO is likely to represent the different companies. Understanding all this, it is possible to find the right manager who will be able to eat up the company’s processes, develop the business for many years and, in the near future, forget about managerial recruitment at all.

Selection starts with the concept of a “good manager”

As already mentioned, people have different perceptions of what constitutes a good manager. However, a leader who is both businesslike and strict, and a leader with a liberal attitude, can bring a team together, motivate employees and successfully achieve the company’s goals. Before hiring a new head of department or company, the definition of a manager should be defined on a case-by-case basis. The type of person to look for will depend on how he or she is perceived.

Recruiters note that managers who are demanding and strict are naturally associated with power, while business leaders, on the other hand, are valued for their personal qualities. However, both types of managers must, of course, be professional and have the necessary competences. Depending on the company’s field of activity, they need to meet the criteria of education, similar work experience, management, economics and other more specialised criteria.

Too open emotions are not a manager’s forte

It has become commonplace to associate modern company or project managers with friendliness and a looser form of management and communication. However, as everywhere, the line between businesslike relations and being too friendly with one’s employees must not be crossed in the manager’s work. However, reasonable democracy is a prerequisite even in the most libertarian of workplaces. A manager who is too open can sometimes make his subordinates nervous, even if he does not want to. For example, by talking about his frequent holidays in exotic lands, he can make others feel uncomfortable and constrained by a fixed minimum or average salary. Thus, a very important criterion in choosing a manager is his ability to maintain the line between pleasant communication with colleagues and the expression of emotions too openly during work.

Why focus only on the best talent?

The practice of the most successful companies in Lithuania and around the world shows that a reliable and loyal group of top-level managers is capable of building profitable businesses. Talent to lead and represent the company they lead is equally important. For this reason, during the selection process, a great deal of attention is paid to the additional competences of the candidate, which are indicative of a smooth and proper future performance of the manager. Today, companies do not need a simple “boss”. Talent and creativity are valued in many of today’s companies as much as respect for the hierarchy of the organisation. After all, leadership is often described as a true art form, requiring a great deal of ingenuity, talent and energy. This is what should be considered when choosing a good new manager.
