Key criteria for selecting a manager

Human resources is a very common term today. It describes the relationship between the employees of any company and the success of the business, in which the manager plays a key role. Naturally, only a competent person with leadership qualities can make a smooth contribution to the development of the business and motivate other employees. The question is therefore: what aspects should be taken into account in order to ensure that the selection of managers does not disappoint and brings positive results in the long term?

Today, executive recruitment can be organised not only by the owners of the company themselves, but also by professional recruiters who know exactly what to consider when selecting a top-level manager. The essence of this selection is to save time and money.

There are two things to consider when deciding to recruit managers. The first is whether the manager has all the necessary competences and whether his/her personal qualities are the same or at least very similar to those required. This step involves assessing the applicant’s knowledge, which for every manager must be higher than that of a normal employee. Therefore, during the selection process, each potential manager may be asked about his/her educational background, training or seminars attended. Continuous training and development in one’s professional field is a sign of a manager’s experience and ability to organise a business. Without the necessary competences, it is hard to imagine recruiting a manager.

A second important criterion is the value system of the managerial candidate. In a company, one of the most important aspects is the culture within the organisation. If the values and perception of the work or of the team of a newcomer are different from those of the rest of the company, he or she will not fit in with the rest of the workforce, to say the least. This is particularly important for managers, who in a way reflect the vision and value system of the company as a whole, and in a way represent not only their own beliefs about work and business, but also those of their colleagues. A clash between the values of a new manager and the values of an existing group of employees can lead to a real business fiasco. To prevent this from happening, it is essential that the candidate’s value system and its alignment within the company are assessed as responsibly as possible during the selection process.

Thus, the selection of the best and most talented managers today is based on several key criteria. In addition to experience, education and professional competences, it is worth bearing in mind that certain personal qualities or convictions of the manager’s personality are also very often decisive for the recruitment of top professionals and business leaders. From a large pool of applicants, it will be easy to choose the best manager if the selection process is organised according to a set of rules and if the job interview is based on methods such as interviewing the candidate, practical exercises, discussion of CVs or references, etc.
